I'll put in my vote for more than a snippet of the reply. In the Google SketchUp forum (which has no editing of posts and severely limited attachment features) when I get a notification of a reply, the entire text of the reply is in the notice. If I don't care to reply myself at that time, I'm done, I do not have to go anywhere else just to read the rest of the message. That does not update my on-forum "viewed" state for those messages, but that's a small price to pay for being able to avoid site swapping.
Also not mentioned and greatly to be desired, if possible: Editing one's own previous post. First, this saves having to delete and repost to correct typos that are usually most visible after "Post" has been clicked. Second, in the SketchUcation Plugins Forum, the standard practice is that links to Plugins are always in the first post in the thread. If the author updates the Plugin, they update the link, the version number, and the release notes in that post. For Plugin threads that have gone on to hundreds of replies over time, the link for the latest download is still instantly available. Some forums allow for the first use but not the second by allowing a time limit like 15 minutes during which the post may be edited by the poster, but then it is closed off. Ning-based forums do this, ostensibly, but the Edit link has never worked for me. I hope this helps, August |

Also, i had not seen this mentioned anywhere in the "how-to"s: Editing one's own previous post. I didn't see this feature until I had posted, so now I am making use of it. I heartily endorse it. First, this saves having to delete and repost to correct typos that are usually most visible after "Post" has been clicked. And third, as here, it saves embarrassing post-Post corrections since all too often the truth only comes out after you have opened your mouth. I hope this helps, August |

Um, OK, make that: Editing your previous post with a real edit and not a repost of the same message. |
