A spherical area light would be very helpful for creating softer, realistic shadows.  I’ve used flat area lights back to back but they don’t cast light to the sides. 

Better yet, make self-eliminating materials actually cast light so the light source can be any shape.  This would also make a light source, like a light bulb, visible—something that is really difficult to produce correctly currently.
